The Maharashtra state government told the legislative assembly that the licenses of six manufacturers of cough syrups in the state had been revoked and suspended for violations of rules.

Mr. Sanjay Rathod, the Minister of the Food and Drug Administration, provided this information to the Legislature on Friday while responding to an attention notice from the Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP), Mr. Ashish Shelar, and others.

In his response, Mr. Rathod noted that 18 children in Uzbekistan were said to have died last year as a result of cough syrup produced by a company with headquarters in Noida, Uttar Pradesh. He reported that 84 out of 108 cough syrup producers in the state were the subject of an investigation by the Maharashtra government. Lastly, six companies had their licenses suspended, and four of them received orders to halt manufacturing.

Additionally, he stated that more than 17 companies were issued show-cause notices for breaking the guidelines. Mr. Shelar brought up the 66 children who died in the Gambia, purportedly as a result of Indian-imported cough syrups. However, the minister claimed that the company accused of breaking the norms, in that case, had its headquarters in Haryana and no production facilities in Maharashtra.
